Despite being the centre off all things artsy during the festival in August, for the rest of the year, the film scene in Edinburgh is mainly dominated by big national chains. However, there is a handful of independent cinemas which offer viewings of a wider range of films as well as some great student discounts.
The Filmhouse
88 Lothian Road
The Filmhouse is the home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and has a really varied selection of films at all times. They also have a great café/bar- make an evening of going to the cinema! If you’re a real film buff, it’s worth splashing out £30 on their annual membership which will give you £1.50 off all ticket prices, 10% off in the café/bar, 10% off merchandise and 10% off sweets and soft drinks. Their special Friday matinee promotion means it only costs £2.60 for students to see a film on Friday afternoon. All other matinees are a steal at £3.60 for students and evening showings are £5.50.
The Cameo
38 Home Street **Most Student Friendly**
The Cameo shows a wide range of films, from blockbusters to small independent films. They also have a great café/bar attached which serves really reasonable food and drinks. A student membership to The Cameo is only £20 for students for the year and offers: £1.90 discount on full price tickets, no booking fee (save £1.60) and 10% off food and drink. This membership is FREE to all first year students who register before the 31st December of the year in which they start uni. The Cameo also offers membership to students only club ‘The Slackers Club’. In association with E4 this is free to join and offers free access to special screening every month. Average tickets for students are £4.50.
The Dominion Cinema
18 Newbattle Terrace
The Dominion is tucked away in Morningside and is definitely an Edinburgh Institution- it’s been showing films since 1938! Although The Dominion does not offer student concessionary rates on standard tickets they do have a Student Super Deal from Sunday-Thursday which entitles anyone with a valid student card to a film and a drink from the sweets kiosk for £4.80.
